Evidence Map logo

Alma Economics was commissioned by Gamble Aware to review the literature in order to establish what is known about how communities use self-help strategies (for both gambling and adjacent sectors), what the motivators are for using these strategies, and how effective they can be. Furthermore, the research aimed to demonstrate how communities of people that have been marginalised use these strategies in the absence of appropriate formal support services. For this purpose, we developed a map summarising the current evidence based on the systematic evidence review we conducted.

The evidence map organises the research studies based on their methodology and format of self-help strategy. Each cell includes the number of papers that correspond to these specific categories. By clicking on a cell, a tab appears. This tab includes the titles of the research studies that have used the relevant methodology (x-axis) and explored the relevant format of self-help strategy (y-axis).

Supplementary information includes (i) the abstracts or brief summaries of the reviewed sources that included such sections, (ii) the author(s) of every piece of evidence, (iii) publication date, and (iv) a web link to the study of interest. Our map is interactive; it includes filters that allow users to swiftly explore the evidence of interest. Users can choose between the following filters: publication date and region (where specified).

Note: One study might use more than one methodology or explore more than one format of self-help strategy meaning that the same study might appear in more than one cell.

Disclaimer: Several sources were retrieved from academic journals or other databases that do not provide their content for free. As a result, readers may not be able to access these sources directly from this evidence map. If interested, the readers could either examine their subscription options or contact the providers of the sources or relevant libraries to explore the possibility of accessing them.
